The Woolly Whale Project

I'm a recent graduate of a textiles program living in St. John's, Newfoundland. During the final semester of my program I decided to knit a life-sized minke whale. I created this blog with the intention of sharing the progress and process of this project.

The whale is now complete, and this blog will continue on as a way for me to share my current textile adventures, but you can find all posts related to the creation of the whale here!

And you can check out my interview with CBC about the project here!

Here's a quick rundown on some basic details of the project:
The whale is 28 feet long, from nose to tail, and three-dimensional. The whale's circumference at it's widest point is about 15 feet around. The knitting itself was done mostly on a knitting machine, with a few bits here and there being hand-knit. I used a 2-ply, medium weight yarn made from 100% Atlantic Canadian wool. I hand-dyed the wool myself using natural dyes. The whale's interior structure is largely constructed from pex pipe, in a ribs and spine-type form.
